EpiPen Price Gouging
What is an EpiPen?
EpiPen auto-injectors were created specifically for those patients who have a history of potentially fatal allergic episodes to specific sources such as peanuts, bee stings, shellfish etc. EpiPens are self-injectable devices containing a small dose of epinephrine to treat anaphylactic shock and sever allergic reactions. Epinephrine (adrenaline) is considered by the National Food Allergy Guidelines to be the primary treatment choice for severe allergic responses.
Why Are They So Expensive?
EpiPens are deemed as a medical necessity by millions of allergy sufferers who rely on the potentially life-saving properties the device provides. Since 2007 when Mylan purchased EpiPen from Merck & Co. the price has increased exponentially. What used to cost EpiPen users as little as $100 now costs up to $900. Industry experts have estimated that EpiPens cost Mylan no more than $30. Mylan has not provided a legitimate reason for the price increase. In response to class action lawsuits, governmental and societal pressure in summer 2016, Mylan has since agreed to reduce prices.
Millions of allergy suffering consumers are gouged in order to obtain these potentially life-saving devices, but they are not the only ones. Other groups have also been victimized by Mylan’s pricing model. They include:
What can you do?
- Insurances companies: Consumers often blame insurance companies for the rising costs of drugs, but in reality it is the drug companies that determine the costs. There is currently no regulations in place to prevent drug companies from charging exorbitant prices.
- Employers: Many businesses offer their employees medical benefits at a reduced cost. The company is often responsible for the bulk of costs for the medications their employees need.
- Government/Medicaid: Since Medicaid patients do not pay for their EpiPens, Medicaid is responsible for the full cost of these devices.
If you rely on this potentially life-saving device and have been required to pay these highly inflated prices, please join us in the fight to ensure that Mylan understands that we will not tolerate unmerited cost increases for a device that can save lives.
