Health Hazards in Nail Salons-
Poisonous Polish

The chemicals that make nail polishes chip resistant, pliable, and shiny are being associated with serious side effects that have been detrimental to the health of many cosmetic workers and their unborn children. The New York Times has published new findings showing an alarming number of nail salon workers are suffering from ailments such as lung cancer, leukemia, and even miscarriages. This is due to a poisonous combination of chemicals that is used in most nail polish products.

It starts as something seemingly minor; constant nosebleeds, an annoying cough that won’t seem to subside, an aching throat. Do not take these symptoms lightly- they can be warning signs of lung cancer and leukemia, both of which are caused by chemicals present in nail polish such as formaldehyde. If you work in a nail salon, you are being exposed to poisonous chemicals like formaldehyde and toluene daily. Both of these chemicals cause several forms of cancer and birth defects in unborn children. Studies reveal cosmetologists, including manicurists, have suffered from increased death rates associated with cancer and Hodgkin’s disease.

In the New York Times report, an alarming number of women suffered from several miscarriages while working in a nail salon. Others gave birth to children who suffered from cognitive, development, and attention deficit orders, all due to the harmful chemicals they were exposed to daily while pregnant. In one case, a manicurist who reportedly suffered at least three miscarriages was advised by her physician to change jobs and was warned the chemicals she was exposed to while working may be harmful to her lungs and liver.

While some poisonous chemicals such as Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) have been banned in Europe and come with labels warning of “possible risk of impaired fertility” in places like Australia, the FDA in the United States has failed to protect nail salon workers as the chemical is a common ingredient used to make polish resistant to chipping. According to the FDA, cosmetic products and ingredients do not need pre-market approval unless they are color additives. Cosmetic companies are also not required to share safety information or warnings with the FDA. Nail salon workers are subjected to a hazardous environment every day due to the irresponsibility of cosmetic companies in an unregulated field.

Do not suffer in silence. If you or a loved one have developed cancer, had a miscarriage, or had a child born with birth defects while working in a nail salon, call 1-800-LAW-FIRM now.

The Toxic Trio

Three dangerous chemicals that are detrimental to your health are common ingredients in nail polish products.

  • Formaldehyde: This cancer causing chemical is used in most nail hardening products. Prolonged exposure to formaldehyde can cause breast cancer, brain cancer and leukemia.
  • Toluene: Not only does this hazardous chemical cause color vision loss, and kidney and liver damage, it can be harmful to your unborn child if you are working in a nail salon while pregnant. Daily exposure to pregnant women increases the risk for miscarriages. Toluene is a common solvent in nail polish.
  • Dibutyl phthalate (DBP): It has already been banned from use in cosmetics in Europe. DBP has been linked to causing low birth weights, hyperactive and attention deficit disorders, and malformations of reproductive organs in children born to women who work in nail salons while pregnant. If you work in a nail salon, you are exposed to this poisonous chemical daily as it is a common ingredient used to prevent chipping in nail polish.
