However, there are some serious side effects involved with taking this drug. If you or someone you know is experiencing any of the following, you should get in touch with our legal team to explore your options.
Risperdal can cause Gynecomastia, or breast enlargement in men. Symptoms of this condition include breast sensitivity, discharge coming out of the nipple, and enlargement and/or swelling of the breast tissue. This is unnatural and can cause emotional trauma in patients.
One of the major side effects for taking Risperdal is that it raises the body’s levels of prolactin. Elevated prolactin levels have been linked to breast cancer. Though this is not listed as an official side effect, doctors need to proceed with caution when prescribing this drug, especially in patients with a family history of breast cancer. Also note that breast cancer can affect both men and women.
Have your breasts started releasing milk even though you are not pregnant or nursing? If so, you are experiencing Galactorrhea, a documented side effect of taking Risperdal. This condition has been traced to elevated levels of prolactin which happens after taking this drug.
As mentioned, Risperdal can elevate prolactin levels in the body. When the level of prolactin reaches a highly abnormal level in the blood stream, this is called Hyperprolactinemia. Conditions caused by elevated levels of prolactin include infertility, loss of libido, secreting breast milk at an abnormal time, breast enlargement, impotence, low sperm count, and inability to menstruate.
When a patient has several conditions, that can each cause heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, this is called “Metabolic Syndrome”. These conditions include diabetes, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Risperdal can cause Metabolic Syndrome.
The pituitary gland is responsible for releasing hormones into the body that control vital bodily functions. Risperdal can cause tumors in this gland. If you experience symptoms of having a pituitary tumor and you are taking Risperdal, you should seek legal counsel.
