Is Your Shower Routine Hiding a Dirty Secret?

Sep 19, 2024 - Blog by

We all love that fresh-out-of-the-shower feeling, right? You step into your daily ritual with soaps, lotions, shampoos, conditioners, and deodorants in tow, emerging squeaky clean and ready to conquer the day. But have you ever stopped to wonder what’s in those bottles and tubes? Recently, there’s been a lot of buzz about the sneaky cancer-causing ingredients in some of our favorite products. Yet, we’re still lathering them on like it’s no big deal. Why?

Big consumer product giants like Procter & Gamble have been around forever, earning our trust and making us feel good about what we use on our bodies. They’ve got shiny ads, fancy labels, and that reassuring sense of “we’ve got your back.” But here’s the thing—research is increasingly pointing out that some of the ingredients in these everyday products are doing more harm than good. It’s time to ask: Should we really be using something just because it’s familiar?

Let’s rewind a bit and talk about the notorious Johnson & Johnson baby powder case. For years, that powder was a staple in households worldwide. We trusted it, believing it was safe enough for our newborns. Fast forward to lawsuits and health scandals, and we discovered it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. This isn’t just a one-off mistake—it’s a warning that some of these massive companies aren’t always transparent about what goes into the products we use every day.

Now, I get it—beauty is pain, or so they say. But does it have to be cancer? Yikes! The answer should be a hard no. Yet, many of the products in your shower routine might be waving a little red flag with ingredients like parabens, phthalates, and formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (yeah, that’s a thing). These substances are known for their link to cancer, hormone disruption, and other health problems. Why are they still in products we put on our skin and hair every day?

Here’s where we need to get serious for a second: It’s high time that large consumer product manufacturers step up. With all the research out there, companies shouldn’t be hiding behind “acceptable limits” or outdated safety claims. We deserve better. These giants have the resources to develop safer alternatives and phase out harmful substances. It shouldn’t even be up for debate!

Here are some of the main ingredients to avoid:

  1. Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde-releasing preservatives (FRPs): Used to prevent bacteria growth, formaldehyde is a known carcinogen. FRPs like DMDM hydantoin, imidazolidinyl urea, diazolidinyl urea, and quaternium-15 can release formaldehyde over time.
  1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES): While these are common detergents and foaming agents, they may contain 1,4-dioxane, a byproduct that has been classified as a possible human carcinogen.
  1. Parabens: These preservatives, including methylparaben, ethylparaben, and propylparaben, can mimic estrogen in the body, which has been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers like breast cancer.
  1. Phthalates: Often found in fragrances, phthalates are linked to hormone disruption and have been associated with certain cancers.
  1. Triethanolamine (TEA) and Diethanolamine (DEA): These chemicals are used to balance the pH of shampoos, but when combined with other ingredients, they can form nitrosamines, which are known carcinogens.

So, next time you’re in the shower, lathering up with your favorite products, maybe take a second look at the ingredients list . You have the right to feel confident that your shower routine isn’t just cleansing your skin but also keeping your health in check. It’s time we push back and ask the brands we trust to be more responsible about what they put on store shelves.
