About Proton Pump Inhibitors and Kidney Disease
A Proton Pump Inhibitor (PPI) is a type of medication used to treat a number of gastrointestinal issues including heartburn, acid reflux, stomach ulcers and inflammation of the esophagus. Common brands of PPI medicines include Prilosec, Nexium, and Prevacid. These drugs have been linked to causing kidney damage in some users. If you suffer from any type of kidney damage including acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease or interstitial nephritis, you may be eligible for compensation.
Proton Pump Prohibitors Linked to an Increased Risk of Stomach Cancer
Gut Medical Journal, a highly-esteemed medical journal that focuses on gastric health research, recently published findings that linked PPI usage to an increased risk of stomach cancer. Stomach cancer is a relatively rare form of cancer that is significantly increased in some patients who take a PPI medication to manage GERD symptoms or other conditions such as acid reflux disease. The use of PPIs may double a users’ chances of developing stomach cancer. Additionally, patients using a PPI for longer than three years may substantially increase their odds by eight times.
FDA Warning
In 2014 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandated a new warning for PPI medications regarding the link between these drugs and interstitial nephritis: Acute interstitial nephritis has been observed in patients taking PPIs including Prilosec. Acute interstitial nephritis may occur at any point during PPI therapy and is generally attributed to an idiopathic hypersensitivity reaction. Discontinue Prilosec if acute interstitial nephritis develops.
What is Interstitial Nephritis?
Interstitial nephritis is a kidney disorder that causes inflammation between the kidney tubules. Once this inflammation occurs, it can cause many symptoms that range from mild to severe. Interstitial nephritis can be acute (sudden occurrence) or chronic. This serious condition can lead to severe complications including kidney failure if left untreated. Symptoms Include:
- A decrease in urination
- Appearance of blood in the urine
- Water retention/bloating/weight increase
- Fever
- Fatigue
- Confusion
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Rash
- Inflammation
- High blood pressure
If you or someone you love is exhibiting any of these symptoms, see your physician immediately.
