Tasigna
Tasigna May Cause Atherosclerosis, Peripheral Arterial Disease, and Limb Amputations
What is Tasigna?
Tasigna is a capsulated medication manufactured by the pharmaceutical company, Novartis. It is one of the most well-known cancer drugs worldwide and is the brand name for nilotinib. Tasigna is prescribed to adults with chronic myeloid leukemia also known as CML. This type of cancer begins in the blood-forming cells located in the bone marrow— platelets, early myeloid cells and many of the white blood cells. CML is a slow-developing form of leukemia, but it does have the potential to change into a fast-growing and more aggressive form that is often more difficult to treat.
Unfortunately for the users of the drug, Novartis was aware of the severe risks associated with Tasigna since at least 2011, just four years after the drug was approved by the FDA for the treatment of CML. The manufacturer issued a side effects warning in Canada in 2013 but did not warn Tasigna patients or medical professionals in the U.S.
Food and Drug Administration Adds Black-Box Warning
The FDA approved Tasigna’s with the addition of a black box warning to warn medical, pharmaceutical professionals and patients about the possibility of sudden death and disease prolongation among patients with heart rhythm issues. The warning cautions against patients diagnosed with an abnormal heart rhythm known as long QT syndrome being prescribed the medication.
Are there Other Side Effects that Weren’t Included in the FDA’s Warning?
Yes, other life-altering and life-threatening side effects have been reported by CML patients taking Tasigna. One major side effect includes Atherosclerosis.
